It’s official spooky season! Happy October! Fall is my favorite season, and I am so ready for the temps to start dropping. Saturdays, at home, watching my new favorite football team (Go Chiefs!) is so fun. Kidding. KIDDING. Sorta. :) Here are a few things on the internet that caught my attention this week. Happy Sunday scrolling.
Dark House podcast. At the crossroads of true crime, interior design, and the paranormal, Dark House explores beautiful homes that can’t seem to escape their dark histories.
Peloton Sleep Meditations. My friend Kristin told me about these and I’ve been listening to these every night to help my brain unwind at bedtime. Turn them on and drift off.
31 Spooky Movies for October. Each of these movies has a “spooky” rating.
If you want to get more info to decide if a movie is kid-appropriate, check out Common Sense Media. I pay for a subscription and it’s worth it. Look up any media to get info on its educational value, positive messages, positive role models, diverse representation, violence and scariness, sex / romance / nudity, languages, and drinkin g / smoking / drugs. Each piece of media also has a “parents need to know synopsis.” Highly trustworthy in my experience.
The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control (by Katherine Morgan Schafler). A science backed look at how to utilize what you may view as your weakness as a super-power strength. I don’t recommend the audio version. Struggled with the quiet voice of the narrator. Great book though.
@Color.Nerd on TikTok. Wow. Talk about a rabbit hole. This TikTok is all about making color theory fun and accesible. The designer in me loved this video about his proposed Crayola 24 box and why. (In case you’re wondering, I agree with his proposal).
Back on my soapbox about Andrea Gibson. Listen to their first episode with Glennon Doyle and Abby Womach here (scroll to 1:21:00 to hear their spoken word poem about the soul’s message to the stars about what it’s like to have a human body). I can’t listen to it without being moved to tears. Then go to this more recent second episode and listen to Andrea’s poem about their partner, Meg at 57:00. Honestly, listen to all of both episodes, but if you only have a little time, listen to the poems. Andrea is Colorado’s new poet laureate. Andrea Gibson. Anne Lamont. The greatest modern day writers in all the land. Standing by it.
Things my pre-teen and I send back and forth: this bird loves to dance to 50 Cent.
A Frasier reboot!? YES, PLEASE! Bryan used to make so much fun of me for absolutely loving this show!
A cute Etsy store for spooky season Frame TV art. Love the art with the cute little ghosts. I don’t do scary, but I can do a cute ghost. Purchased for our living room.
Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones (Netflix). My mom and I have been chatting about this series. It’s fascinating. 4 hour-ish long episodes hosted and narrated by National Geographic Explorer, Dan Buettner, as he discovers five unique communities where people live extraordinarily long and vibrant lives. Have you watched it yet?
An arrest is made in the infamous murder of Tupac Shakur.
The Case for Mediocrity. (Time.com) I loved this. I’ve been thinking a lot about ambition, especially as my kids enter the ages of practices, tests, and more homework.
The Golden Bachelor began airing this week. I think this is just the reboot the franchise needed. I haven’t watched yet, but plan to start this week.
ICYMI from me & Simplified this week:
On Raising Includers
I’ve always had an enormous heart for others, but I wasn’t always an Includer. And I’m not proud to admit that. I was raised one, through and through. But as a college student / young adult coming into my own faith, a few church leaders told me “this is what is right” and I took that on as my own belief. Besides, these were the beliefs of a believer. Or so I thought…
