Sunday Scroll #100 (!)
Find your next favorite author, learn to take a compliment, how to make the gym less scary, + why living like it's 1987 will help you thrive
Happy Sunday! And welcome to the 100th (!!!!) edition of the Sunday Scroll!
It’s been such a delight to be invited into your inbox and share some of my favorite uplifting, instructive, contemplative, and silly internet finds from the week. It’s a fun ritual for me to write, hopefully as fun is it is for you to read. You know how I always invite you to get a beverage you like before we begin? I do it myself! A crispy Diet Coke, a warm cup of tea, a big cup of coffee… they’ve each been by side while I’ve scrolled through links that made me think, I just have to share this with the Sunday Scrollers.
I get such a kick out of sharing fun things with you. When I see something that makes me pause and think, it’s almost like finding something amazing at the thrift store—someone made this beautiful thing, and I get to find joy in it too.
Thanks for sharing your own wit and wisdom in the comments week after week. I love talking with you about what you learned, and diving deeper into your own advice and recommendations. This community is truly the best! Oh and PS: you might notice some new graphics (and a new header!) here this week. I’ve been working with my (brilliant) friend Nicole Yang on developing some new branding, logos, and more — and am excited to roll them out here as we go.
You know what I’m about to say: grab a glass of something delicious (I’ve got a giant coffee beside me as I type this), and let’s get scrolling!
At 42 think I’m the most confident and content I’ve ever been. And I resonated with every single item in this list of habits to thrive in midlife. My favorite? The case for 1980s media management. How much calmer would we be if we consumed as much media as our parents did in the ‘80s? (I know I would be!) Every item on this list completely tracks.
Do you want to know the best thought exercise I had this week? Spending a few minutes wondering what would be on my life’s Spotify Wrapped. Thinking about the highlights I’ve been through—the minutes I’ve cry-laughed with my people over the silliest things, the meals I’ve enjoyed the most, the times I’ve been blessed enough to change someone else’s life, or when someone has changed my own—that was like keeping a gratitude journal on steroids. (Plus, in this post I was fascinated to read through the list of items other people would put on their life’s Spotify Wrapped. I want to know more about the person who said “I want to see all of my grocery lists, first to last.” That would say a lot, wouldn’t it? And someone wanted to know “how many times I swam by a shark.” No, thank you!! What would you put on yours?)
When you finish a book by a new-to-you author, it’s just the best, isn’t it? If you’re like me, I bet you read and read and read everything that author has ever written—then mourn when you finish their last book and sign up for alerts when their next one comes out. So how do you find your next book? Well, you could start by typing that author’s name into this literature search engine and clicking through the map of authors who write in the same vein they do! This is what the internet should be used for! What a genius idea.
Are you good at taking compliments? I’m not always, but I’m trying to be better at it (if I had a nickel for every time I’ve said “Thanks! I got it on sale!” 😂). If you want to let go of Imposter Syndrome a little bit, learn to accept a compliment—plus, you’re showing kindness to the person showing you kindness. Side note: I’ve always enjoyed Kristen Bell’s advice to be absolutely haphazard with your compliments. What does that mean? According to Kristen, if you like something about someone, tell them. Don’t keep it to yourself! I just love that.
