I think Instagram is breaking my brain
And I'm not sure if it's me or the app (jk, it's IG)
I’ve been thinking about writing this post for a long time now. The idea has lived in a little Asana task under 💡since mid-2025. But every time I sit down to write my weekly essay, I choose something a bit lighter. Mainly because my heart can’t handle it. But after recent events, I’m leaning in today.
What does it mean to be a “Person on the Internet” in 2026? What does it mean to be “The Face of a Brand,” to carry the responsibility of many salaries, and to know the success (or downfall) of your company (to some... or every... degree) hangs on the words you choose to share or not share.
In 2008, I was twenty-five years old. I started sharing about the side-hustle-style business I was building on my personal Facebook account. And later, when I realized more than just my friends and family may be interested in handmade stationery, I started sharing on Twitter. When I realized there was true outside / social interest in my journey and in Simplified (Emily Ley Paper at the time), I started sharing on a blog.
Community was built quickly. The concept of sharing your life and the behind-the-scenes of your work on the internet was new. It was very interesting. There are a few of us 2008 entrepreneurs still around doing what we started back then (quick wave and air kiss to each of you who are still dear friends). We’re still working hard, doing what we love (albeit probably a lot better than we did back then), and showing up on the internet.
But the landscape...? That’s another story.
