Just here to say don’t forget to put sun screen on the back of your hands!! Also your neck & décolleté. We get so much more sun exposure than we realize!

Such a good reminder! Thank you! I get eczema on the backs of my hands and now they look like old lady hands… I’m 34. 🤣 I never thought to put sunscreen on the backs of my hands, as dumb as that probably sounds!

I really needed to read this — thank you! The beauty industry has made all of this so confusing and overwhelming, it's a relief to see evidence that simple routines (with affordable products) really are enough. And, yes, PLEASE, publish a post on tween skincare! My girls are obsessed with Sephora, viral TikTok beauty products, etc., and I need all the help I can get trying to guide them in their skincare journeys!

Dear Emily,

Subscribing to your Substack was worth this post alone - the guide to the order in which to apply all my skincare is exactly something I have needed. Should a 36-year-old woman need someone to explain this to her? Probably not? Did I? ABSOLUTELY!!!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!

As a fellow skincare enthusiast, this post is very informative! Anyone have an under eye cream they love?

For daytime, I have to have Kiehl’s Avocado eye cream: incredibly moisturizing and doesn’t pill up or flake when I put concealer over it like many eye creams do. For nighttime, I have used Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Eye Supercharged Gel-Creme since my early 20s (now 44) and it is spectacular. I have almost no fine lines or wrinkles around my eyes and I am convinced this product is why.

I LOVE Origins Ginseng Eye Cream- it now comes in cool and warm tones, so more inclusive. I’ve been using it for 25+ years (started young b/c drying skin around eyes from acne cleansers) and have friends who now swear by it too. One jar lasts me 6 mos- I’ve tried others, but always have come back.

I’ve been struggling with my skin since middle/high school. I’ve attacked it with all sorts of topical and oral treatments, prescription and over the counter. I’ve also piled on the makeup to “hide” what’s underneath (even though we all know it can only do so much). Now in my mid (almost late) 30s, my skin is better than it’s ever been. I’ve learned that - like children - my skin needs less attacking and more kindness! Double cleansing, consistent moisturizing, and a combination of Cerave and Ordinary products have been the magic formula for me!

My derm just recommended Vanicream for my sensitive skin, and I have been really happy with the face wash and the daily facial moisturizer. I try to use their products that aren't formulated with petroleum, but that is my personal preference. Beyond that I use an eye cream and tinted moisturizer with SPF from Beautycounter and will do a BC mask from time to time instead of getting a facial. Easy Peasy.

Hi Emily! Your Substack is such a gift and always such a treat when I see a new post has been made. And I love love this topic and the skincare deep dive! :) I took the products I use into my Derm and she looked at each ingredient and helped me simplify/come up with something for my skin and concerns. That has been so helpful (and kept me from spending $$ on trendy skincare that I don’t need or is counterproductive). I totally agree about Skinceuticals vitamin C - it’s MAGIC!

Reading this (and about Caroline’s new love for skincare) made me wonder what your morning and after school/evening routines look like now that your kiddos are older and busier. Maybe that’s an idea for a future post! Also - fun fact, my twin girls were born 1-28-2014, a year before your twins!

Thanks for being such a bright spot on the internet! ❤️

Does anyone have an eye cream they are in love with? 👀

Posted in a reply above, but I swear by Kiehl’s Avocado Eye Cream for daytime and Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Gel Crème for the overnight shift!

These are great recommendations! Does anyone have a lip SPF product that they love? I haven't found anything to replace the Fresh Sugar lip balms since the SPF was removed from them.

I have one from Supergoop that I like!

And it doesn’t taste like sunscreen??

Three things: 1. LOVE this post! Thank you. 2. I would love for you to do the post on tween/ teen skincare and please include how you decanted, because my girls also want the pretty packaging! 3. I check all of my products on the ewg skin deep database to try and make sure there's no hidden ingredients I should worry about. P.S. I appreciate this post and feel like I might also need to be in your how to become a person class with your kids! :)

Love hearing all about what is worth the money and what isn’t when it comes to skincare! It is so helpful. There is so much info to sort through that I honestly take personal recommendations (along with medical advice) more seriously. Thanks for sharing all that you’ve learned!

This is awesome. THANK YOU EMILY!

Yes to tween post, please! My ten year old daughter and her friends are obsessed with Sephora. And face masks! Would love to hear your take on this with your new degree! 😅

Loved everything about this! And I can honestly say that I just saw my dermatologist two weeks ago and she was preaching all of this, too! The only advice that she added for me as a contact lens wearer is to add good ol’ Vitamin E under my eyes to help with any tugging/pulling or puffy eyes from being dry. I love that great skin doesn’t have to cost a fortune! Add in some clean eating and you can look radiant! Thanks for highlighting this, future Dr. Emily Ley!

This is so informative!! I’ve been going to the dermatologist since i was a tween and have learned so much along the way. I too agree some of the things I’ve used for years can be found at the drug store, minus some prescriptions. Would love to know your take on facials and masks? Do you use them and what brands?
